We believe in the power of partnership. We have longstanding relationships with experts that enable us to access the breadth and depth of expertise that we cannot maintain as a small stand-alone organisation. This includes expertise in software development, rail freight and research. We have huge appreciation for the talent, experience and work ethic of our partners and consider it a privilege to be associated with them.

University of Hull  |  Logistics Institute

Our roots are in the Logistics Institute where we started the development of Railwhere (then NR+ and REEC) in 2017. We still work closely with the Logistics Institute as our research partner.

Established in 2008, the Logistics Institute is a world-renowned centre for research, education and expertise in logistics and supply chain management. We are a leader in applied logistics research and industry outreach programmes, both national and international. Our focus is to drive sustainable growth through viable logistics.

Our story

Our journey began at the Logistics Institute of the University of Hull in 2018 when we identified a gap in the UK rail freight sector for an integrated, consolidated digital platform for planning and analysis data. This led to the creation of NR+, a digital database and platform that uniquely brings together multiple data sources, making them accessible through a suite of intuitive, browser-based visual applications.

Building on this foundation, we developed our journey simulation tools, enabling in-depth, rapid analysis and optioneering of specific rail journeys across the GB network. These tools have been enthusiastically received by the industry and successfully adopted by leading rail freight operators.

In 2025, the University of Hull supported the creation of Railwhere as a spin-out company to build on our success and ensure a sustainable, growing product offering. This milestone coincided with the launch of our Railwhere product branding, marking a new chapter in our journey.

We take great pride in the impact our products and company are making in enhancing rail freight efficiency and contributing to the decarbonisation of logistics. By continuing to strengthen our partnerships with the Logistics Institute, Lampada Digital Solutions, and leading rail technical and emissions specialists, we remain committed to delivering innovative solutions to complex rail freight challenges.
